The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union have adopted the EU Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE of 27 January 2003). It obliges manufacturers and distributors to take back used electrical and electronic equipment free of charge for re-use, and arrange fot the recycling or disposal in line with environmental protection requirements. The obligation is based on the principle of producer responsibility.
Between 2004 and 2007 all 27 EU Member countries implemented the requirements of the WEEE Directive into national legislation. Due to various interpretations and existing structures in each country, producers and importers of EEE have to consider 27 different requirements regarding registration, reporting, take back obligations and recycling.
In the future, in the case of new products, environmental protection considerations and recycling ability must already be taken into account right from the product development stage in future.
